I had this happen when a contractor gave me a quote to replace 4 of my windows. When I asked him about his license, he said he would e-mail it to me. I never heard from him again.

Agree - I did this with what I thought was a simple bathroom remodel and it ended up costing me 3 times what I paid the original 'contractor' to get the job done right.

I always say if you think it's expensive to hire a professional wait till you hire an amateur!

Alaways hire a licensed professional with any home improvement project!

Hi Betty-

For painting projects, the painter should not require a down payment prior to the start of the project. A payment on commencement of approximately 30% is customary, however, you should check references thoroughly on any contractor you have never used in the past. Also, the contractor should not require the balance of the contract until completion - this is your 'insurance' that the job is completed to your satisfaction.

I put an ad on Craigslist for a painter and one of the guys that looked at my job gave me a great price but told me I would have to give him 50% down in cash and he would start the next day. I asked him for references and he told me he would call me. I never heard from him again. What are reasonable terms for painting jobs?
